COVID-19 may have temporarily paused international travel, but it didn’t stop the Stage 5 Japanese class at St Paul’s Catholic College, Manly from putting their language skills to the test.

Japanese Manly (1)After studying phrases for eating out and dining etiquette, students took a lunchtime excursion to Japanese Restaurant Waka Izakaya in Manly.

Surrounded by Japanese-speaking staff, students successfully ordered their lunch and conversed with the restaurant’s team.

“Although nervous, the boys did extremely well and successfully ordered their food and drinks in Japanese,” said Amanda Kibby, St Paul’s Japanese teacher.

Japanese Manly 2“This was a great opportunity to be in a Japanese environment and implement the Japanese skills that I have learnt in a real-world situation,” said student Matthew Johnson.

The staff at Waka, including the owner Kaz, opened the restaurant especially for the class and commented on how well the boys spoke and conducted themselves.

“The food was great, and staff were very helpful. This is a great place to go to practice your Japanese skills and eat delicious food,” said Charles, a Stage 5 student.
