New Beginnings
In this Easter season and in our Christian life we rejoice in the Risen Christ who is our hope. The privilege and invitation of ministry within the Church is to serve as a bearer of this hope to others, to serve as witnesses of a new life of grace made possible by the Resurrection of Jesus. This divine hope is needed now more than ever, both within the Church and in our wider society. Where scandal, division and discord reigns we are called to be agents of reconciliation and healing, unfailing in our commitment to Gospel love and compassion, and ambassadors of a radical way of life and self-giving patterned on the life and mission of Jesus. In taking the Gospel to children and families in our State schools, the ministry of the catechist affirms that Jesus is a hope not simply given to ourselves but is a gift intended for others. Hope, like love and faith, is authentic only when it is shared. It has been my own privilege to share in this ministry of service and hope within the Office for Evangelisation over these four years. In late May, I will leave the service of the Diocese of Broken Bay with a profound sense of gratitude for the gifts that this time has brought. TERM 2 Liturgical Calendar 2019 Year C
In this respect I want to give particular thanks to Alison Newell, Michael Tebbutt, Joe Pulis, Colleen Smith and Sharon da Roza for their dedication and unfailing support over this time. The Diocese of Broken Bay is so well served by their professionalism and unmistakeable Christian leadership. It is their gifts which have raised the Diocese up to be a leading influence across Australia in Special Religious Education and which provides daily confidence to coordinators and catechists in their mission. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the CCD team for sharing their gifts with me. In taking leave of the Diocese of Broken Bay, I take up the offer of an appointment in evangelisation in the Archdiocese of Sydney, commencing with the role of Director of Parish 2020, a project of parish renewal and revitalisation. This role will provide advice and support to Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP in the progress of this work and its integration into the structures and ministries for evangelisation within the Archdiocese.

New Life
The New Life of Easter in your Classrooms
In these days more than ever before, children and young people need to know the love of Christ. They need to know that they are loved immeasurably. Our lessons must deliver a message of love and of forgiveness, mercy and peace. Christian faith brings hope for the future and the children will be inspired with hope if you bring the love of the risen Lord into your classes. In doing so, it is important to model Christ’s love to them. Don’t bring a mixed message with you. When you see them, greet them with a smile. Model always the joy that faith can bring into their lives through your example in the classroom. Even when disciplining children, do so in a spirit of Christian love.
A Catechist’s checklist Have I diligently prepared my lesson using the authorised Diocesan CCD curriculum: Walking with Jesus Pathways of Discipleship?
Am I aware of teaching materials and resources available to support my lessons?
Are my additional resources age-appropriate? Do I teach with sensitivity, conscious of the learning ability of the children?
Am I aware of the diverse range of students in my class? Do I value the dignity of each child? Do I understand the developmental stages of children? Do I respect the students’ personal space? Do I use the students’ names when speaking to them?
Those children who acknowledge you when they see you in the street, the supermarket or in Church, do so because they feel connected with you in a spiritual sense. You are the face of Christ to them! We know from Matthew’s Gospel what Jesus thinks of children: “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” (Matt 19:14). May the Holy Spirit guide you as you bring the love of Christ to children and young people. I wish you all a very happy and holy Easter season.

In his Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel), Pope Francis tells us, “On the lips of the catechist the first proclamation must ring out over and over: ‘Jesus Christ loves you; he gave his life to save you; and now he is living at your side every day to enlighten, strengthen and free you.’” (EG 164)
You can bring the Walking with Jesus lessons to life by using storytelling, drama, music, meditation and craft to assist the learning process. For the Easter season, bring yellow and white flowers from the garden to adorn your sacred spaces and holy water to bless the children. Use the language of ‘new life’. Light a candle (battery in the classroom). Talk about Easter eggs that are a symbol of new life. Easter is the greatest story every told. It shaped the history of the world. Let the children see your joy as you spread this message.

The season of Easter gives rise to new life and provides us with the opportunity to spread the joy of Easter in our SRE classes and breathe new life into hearts and minds of the children and young people we teach.

Frequently asked questions about training: Training is an important component of any volunteer work, including SRE. Training is designed to support catechists into the classroom. You learn in a safe, fun environment and meet new people. If you can’t attend training sessions, online training is available.

Q. Why do I have to do training?
A: NO! All new catechists must complete all 8 units of the compulsory CCD Ministry Induction course within the first 12 months of joining the ministry. The 3 units mentioned above must be completed by all SRE volunteers every three years.
A. The Bishop/Administrator of the Diocese of Broken Bay must sign a letter of assurance to the NSW Department of Education every year to confirm that all Catechists receive initial and ongoing training. The Department of Education and the NSW Heads of Christian Churches (including the Catholic Bishops) recognise a basic SRE training standard which all Christian Churches adhere to. In the Diocese of Broken Bay, this standard is known as the CCD Ministry Induction Course. The course covers 72 competencies across 8 topics. It is required to be completed for full authorisation. Better Balanced Futures (an initiative of the Inter Church Commission on Religious Education in Schools and All Faiths SRE certify the training programs of SRE Providers) Q: I am only a helper. Do I still need to attend training? A: Yes! Everyone is referred to as a catechist/SRE Teacher in the eyes of the NSW Department of Education, therefore any volunteer in a classroom must complete all 8 units of the compulsory CCD Ministry Induction Course.
Q: I am a new catechist and I have been told I only need to do 3 units of training, i.e. Child Protection, Authorised Curriculum and Classroom Management. Is this correct?
Q. I am not sure if my training is up to date or if there is something I need to attend? A. Please feel free to contact the registration desk either by email: registrations@bbcatholic.org.au with the details of your enquiry or phone: 8379 1643. Please leave a message if the phone is unattended and someone will return your call. Q. I need to complete the compulsory CCD Ministry Induction course, but I cannot attend all 8 units as advertised on the flyer. What should I do? A. The best thing to do is to contact the registrations desk and they can assist with planning a training schedule to suit your needs. For example, you could complete some units online and some face-toface.
Q: I have been a teacher and as I am qualified. Do I need to complete training?
Q. I have been doing my training online, but I have been told that the unit, Teaching the Authorised Curriculum, must be completed in a face-to-face class. Why is this?
A: Training exemptions are available for qualified teachers for units that relate specifically to teaching strategies. Some units may need to be completed depending on each individual case. Please contact registrations to discuss. Qualified teachers will need to undertake
A. The unit online is a ‘generic’ curriculum course, it gives insights to what an authorised curriculum is, but it does not train you in the use of the Diocese of Broken Bay’s authorised curriculum, Walking with Jesus, Pathways of Discipleship.

From the CCD Training and Formation Registration Desk It was a pleasure last term to assist so many people into training that was suitable to their needs and accommodate their busy time schedules. It was wonderful to see so many of our catechists receive full (green) authorisation cards after completing the compulsory CCD Ministry Induction course. It is our aim this year in 2019 to transfer as many catechists from provisional (yellow) authorisation to full (green) authorisation cards and to ensure that we are compliant with the requirements of the NSW Department of Education. To do this, we require those on yellow authorisation cards to complete the compulsory training in full, as soon as possible. If you are unsure of what you need to do please contact the registrations desk for assistance. All catechists/helpers are required to complete the compulsory CCD Ministry Induction course. The CCD Ministry Induction course is compulsory training for all new catechists and those returning to teach after an extended break from teaching. It consists of eight 2-hour units. The CCDMI is also available to complete online except for the two units, Lesson Planning: Teaching the Authorised CCD Newsletter Term 2, 2019 | Vol 24 Issue 2
Curriculum and Teaching Strategies: Using the Interactive Whiteboard Resources which are both required to be completed ‘face to face’. The compulsory CCD Ministry Induction course will be held at 2 locations in Term 2, at St Ives and at The Entrance. We encourage all those on yellow provisional cards to contact the registrations desk to either register to attend one of these venues or register to complete online. If you have completed part of the CCDMI, you only need attend the remaining units. Children’s Choir Games is a fun event for kids who love to sing. Anyone from Year 2 to Year 12 can come and join in the fun, singing and moving to music, meeting great new friends, playing games and learning lots of new skills. All the participants are divided into three choirs, and the choirs compete against each other for great prizes. There are workshops to learn the competition songs and polish your skills, so that your choir will be unbeatable! This year the Choir Games are being held at St Patrick’s church at Asquith, on Sunday 22 September. Registration opens at 12.30pm, workshops and rehearsals will follow, and then the GAMES begin at 3pm. Bring your friends and family to the Games to cheer you on, because People’s Choice points count towards the final tally! Their vote could make your choir the winners! CCD Training and Formation Offerings CCD training and formation opportunities serve those involved in the mission of Special Religious Education (SRE) in our State Schools but are also open to those in catechesis and evangelising outreach in our Diocese. The Office for Evangelisation offers CCD training to all interested people providing formation that enables the Gospel to be taken into the lives of others.
CCD Ministry induction course is compulsory for all new catechists and those catechists returning to teach after an extended break from teaching. The CCDMI is also available to complete online except for Teaching the Authorised Curriculum which is required to be completed ‘face to face’ along with Using the Interactive SmartBoard. Disciples
Being a Disciple of Jesus
How do I become a disciple of Jesus? When we received the Sacraments of Initiation, we were called to live a life of holiness and to become part of the evangelising mission of the People of God, the Church. Our Baptism is a co-missioning for proclaiming the Word, an invitation to a relationship through prayer and contemplation with the Trinity and to work for justice and the stewardship of the whole of creation. The challenge for each of us who has been baptised is, “How do I grow as a disciple?” Once again the sacraments of Initiation confer all the graces that are required for each of us to grow in a life of holiness and to be an active member of the team that evangelises the world. (CCC n 1533) We must step out in faith.
While maybe not as dramatic as the task that Moses or the prophets were given when God said “Go”, it is just as important. We are not travelling to the ends of the world as the apostles were instructed but we still know that Jesus is with us in all we do. In Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Francis writes about the delightful and comforting joy of evangelizing and he reminds us that “an evangelizer must never look like someone who has just come back from a funeral!” and urges us to “… recover and deepen our enthusiasm, that delightful and comforting joy of evangelizing, even when it is in tears that we must sow…“ n10 Evangelii Gaudium
We belong to a Church that is called to go forth
We belong to a Church that is called to go forth. It is in going forth that we do what Jesus did. Jesus is the Word of God made flesh and as such, he travelled the length and breadth of Palestine proclaiming the coming of the Kingdom of God, in both His words and His actions.
When we read the Sacred Scriptures, time and again we hear God calling forth individuals, giving them a task and then telling them to “Go!” The word of God constantly shows us how God challenges those who believe in him “to go forth”. Abraham received the call to set out for a new land (cf. Gen 12:1-3). Moses heard God’s call: “Go, I send you” (Ex 3:10) and led the people towards the promised land (cf. Ex 3:17). To Jeremiah God says: “To all whom I send you, you shall go” (Jer 1:7). n 20 Evangelii Gaudium

Pope Francis goes on to say in Evangelii Gaudium that each of us needs to discern the direction in which the Lord is sending us. We are all asked to listen to God with ‘the ear of heart’ and to answer God’s call to from our own comfort space and “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” Matt 28:18 - -20 So, what does all this mean for us who go into our local state schools and teach Special Religious Education to the Catholic children attending? We have already discerned which path we are to follow as disciples of Jesus. Our ministry takes us to the schools to proclaim the Good News of Jesus.

As an SRE teacher and disciple of Jesus then, we must convey the joy of the message that we are proclaiming to the children. We need to be enthusiastic and welcoming We not only teach by what we say but also what we do, how we relate to the children and the way we interact with all the other SRE teachers at the school. We also need to be in relationship with the Trinity. We need to be a people who are generous of heart and filled with a spirit of joy. We are, after all, proclaiming the Good News, that God, the Father loved us so much, He sent His Son, Jesus to tell us of that love. Jesus ultimately gave His life for us and won for us eternal life and restored our relationship with the Father. Jesus promised us His Holy Spirit and it is through that Holy Spirit we can continue Jesus’ work of telling all the Good News. Loving Father, You sent your Son Jesus to lead us back into relationship with You. May your Holy Spirit enlighten out minds, warm our hearts and enliven our spirit that we may be joyful witnesses of Your love for every person. Help us to take up our cross each day As we strive to walk with Jesus. Help us to joyfully proclaim Your Good News By what we say and what we do. Intensify our faith in You and may our hunger for your Word never cease. We pray this through Jesus, Your Son, in union with the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. “From Scripture to Pope Francis: Church Tradition and the Call to Justice” A formation morning for all involved in justice and social engagement in the Diocese of Broken Bay, and for all those interested in joining the conversation. Social justice is the great call to action within the Church. Presented by Dr Anthony Maher, (Visiting Professor at Charles Sturt University and Education Officer for the Catholic Schools Office Diocese of Broken Bay), this event will explore the call to justice and mercy arising from sacred Scriptures, through to Vatican II, and as demonstrated by Pope Francis. The reflection will include discussion on how each parish in the Diocese may respond to the Pope’s ‘Call to Holiness’ through social justice.
