World Mission Sunday will be held on Sunday 19 October. Again this year we have had the privilege of working with the good people at Catholic Mission to develop resources for catechists to use in the SRE classroom. The focus this year is on Jamaica with the theme Sock it to Poverty: When I grow up I want to be alive. User friendly and age-appropriate resources are available for infants, primary and secondary classes on the Catholic Mission website www.cm.org.au. Click on the school resources kit and select the purple tab for Catechists and you will find an array of resources suited to the age group you teach. If you would prefer hard copies of DVDs and lesson plans for your class, contact your CCD Regional Office for assistance. These excellent lessons are a great addition to our Term 4 curriculum material and I strongly encourage you to use them. Alison Newell, Diocesan Coordinator, CCD

The Department of Education and Communities now requires that catechists are provided with ongoing training in the areas of child protection and classroom management. In 2014, CCD has focused on child protection and hundreds of catechists have attended training. Please keep an eye out for upcoming training dates and ensure that you book into a child protection training session. Let’s all work together to create safe working environments for children and catechists in our SRE classes. If you would like child protection training in your parish, please ring your regional CCD office for assistance. In 2015, classroom management training will be the focus. from the Diocesan Coordinator, CCD

Welcome to the final term of the year for 2014. Can you believe that we will soon be teaching the children about the liturgical seasons of Advent and Christmas? We have the privileged opportunity in SRE classes to break open the real meaning of Christmas and to teach the children how to use their time in Advent to prepare for the birthday of Jesus. For all of us Advent is a time to look at our relationships and do some work on them. For the children, kindness and forgiveness in their relationships with their siblings and friends and listening to mum, dad or teachers are relationship building strategies that we could encourage them to focus on during their preparation time for Christmas. Another way to help the children to prepare for Christmas during Advent is to have them think of those who are less fortunate and ask them to talk to their families about what they can do to share some of what they have with others. You might explain about the work of St Vincent de Paul and how they assist families at Christmas. I encourage you to use the Advent wreath in your sacred space and lessons and to use your SRE time in term 4 to pray with the children for the peace and joy of Christmas to be with us throughout the year. Pray with them….. for them…. and for their families and take the opportunity in prayer to teach them that real peace

begins at home. Training and Formation. Our online training program is in the final stages of piloting and will soon ready for release. Please let your Parish or Regional CCD Support Coordinator know if you would like to undertake some of your CCD Ministry Induction course using the online training model. There is no compulsion for any catechist to do their training online. Face to face sessions will always be on offer. However, online training will provide choices for those who find it difficult to attend training. It will also be useful for busy catechists who might want to brush up their skills by doing some current training. The Department of Education now requires SRE teachers to undertake ongoing training in the areas of child protection and classroom management. This year, we have focused heavily on the very important area of child protection. To date in 2014 we have run 14 Child Protection training workshops with almost 300 people in attendance. Next year, in addition to child protection training, we will be offering positive classroom management training for new catechists and advanced classroom management training for existing catechists. I strongly encourage you to participate in this training when it is offered in your region.

This year, I have very much enjoyed meeting many of you at child protection training sessions. The high quality of work that you do in the classroom is a testimony to your dedication to sharing your faith with the children that you teach. Your attitude to ongoing training and formation to further develop your faith, knowledge and skills to teach SRE is commendable. I thank you most sincerely for taking the time to participate in training sessions. When catechists gather, friendship, food and conversation are as important as the training material and learning. Catechists are great networkers and you are developing each other as you discuss your classes and experiences with other catechists around a cup of tea or during a break at a training session. Season Greetings I would like to take this opportunity to thank all catechists for their ongoing commitment to this wonderful ministry. I congratulate you on your contribution to the faith formation of the children you teach. I wish you and all your loved ones a very happy and holy Christmas and a well-earned extended school holiday break over the summer period. I look forward to working with you again in 2015. Alison Newell Diocesan Coordinator, CCD

Catholic Musicians provide quality songs for Catechists During 2013, an approach was made to a number of Catholic musicians who produce quality music for religious education to discuss the possibility of making their material available for catechists to use in their SRE lessons. Mr Jude Hennessy, Director of CCD in the Diocese of Wollongong made the approach on behalf of CCDs across the State. We were overwhelmed by the response of the musicians who spoke so highly of the volunteer work of catechists and gave access to their music via the interactive electronic whiteboard resource which has been developed to support the CCD curriculum. The songs are now available on the recently released Version 3 of the Broken Bay Interactive SmartBoard resource. The songs are not intended to replace the Music for Discipleship CD which is used in conjunction with the Walking with Jesus curriculum material. The additional music is provided to offer further choices to catechists in the use of music with their lessons. Congratulations to Rebecca Bishop and Joe Pulis who worked on the SmartBoard USB resource project which enables Catechists to take a thumb drive along to the classrooms, get access to 4

Scripture, stories, games, prayers and now additional music that supports the K-6 Curriculum. What is even more impressive is that the musicians have made their material available for Catechists, in Dioceses across NSW/ ACT. Key to the success of the project has been Twoby2 coming on board. Paul Simon, the promoter of Twoby2’s music himself used to be a catechist whilst studying at university and believes that ‘making Twoby2’s music available to these great volunteers is at the heart of the evangelising purpose of Twoby2’s music.’ John Burland, whose material is well known amongst catechists, when asked if he would consider making his work available to Catechists did not hesitate and stated, ‘anything for catechists, they do amazing work’ His songs along with all other contributors have been built into the SmartBoard files. The Dogmatics has written a variety of albums for use in schools, and similarly were very generous in their desire to get their music in the hands of catechists. The Illawarra based group have a passion for making good music for kids to enliven their faith and their catchy songs are proving really popular with catechists.

Secondary Ministry I often wonder as a High School catechist if the message is getting through. Could I do better? As a relatively new catechist and an older person, I find what I call the “casual indifference” of today’s teenagers difficult to understand. Then I have a day with year 7 in first term at Pittwater High School. The lesson was number 7.2.3 about Looking for Jesus. The aim was to develop further knowledge about Jesus and understand better some of his human and divine characteristics . One of the exercises was to devise an “ad campaign” to publicise Jesus to local youth with the Catholic Church as the client. The responses were a brilliant kaleidoscope of colour and imagination. The ideas range from T shirt slogans, caps, to TV ads. Some real humour as in suggesting “Hey Girls Jesus is single!!” They all seemed to understand, “He walks on water” advertising for board shorts! I should not have doubted the power and effectiveness of the Holy Spirit. This grace filled moment was enough to inspire me for the rest of this year. The Joy of the Gospel

Part 2 of 7

EVANGELII GAUDIUM APOSTOLIC EXHORTATION ON THE PROCLAMATION OF THE GOSPEL IN TODAY’S WORLD equip ourselves to teach in the 21st Century in child centred classrooms. Beyond these educational, technological and physical demands lies the greater challenge. When Pope Francis asks “What are you waiting for?”, he is asking us to find opportunities to prepare ourselves spiritually as well as mentally and resourcefully. This is not easy. Pope Francis actually states “how difficult it is to find trained parish catechists willing to persevere in this work for some years”³. Well in naming the difficulty and answering God’s call to this work, we as catechists in our Diocese of Broken Bay are proclaiming Challenge 2: Let us not allow the Gospel in today’s world. ourselves to be robbed of the “You are the salt of the earth! Mt joy of evangelisation!¹ 5:13. Let us be humbled by our efforts and When reflecting on this challenge, I challenged through the Word of God imagined myself secretly watching the and Evangelii Gaudium to deepen, Samaritan woman and Jesus at the renew and transform our own well where the encounter became a spirituality to continue in this vital momentous catalyst for the Samaritan work. woman. She was propelled to run “But if the salt loses its saltiness, proclaiming Jesus (Acts 9:20;cf 22:6how can it be made salty again? It is 21). When and where was your first no longer good for anything, except encounter with Jesus Christ? Was this to be thrown out and trampled encounter an active encounter like the Samaritan woman or did it occur over a long period of assimilation, passive encounter? Active or passive, our meetings with Jesus Christ, challenge us not to keep these experiences to ourselves but to joyfully share the warmth of our faith with others. That way, others are drawn to becoming evangelised, seeing the joy of our encounter with Christ. Pope Francis says to evangelise is to make the kingdom of God present in our world². It is essential therefore as catechists, in answering our baptismal call to evangelise that each new day, we ‘see’ our work through new eyes. At the coalface of mission, we are challenged by mandatory training to

underfoot” Mt 5:13. One may be able to run one marathon without much training but to do it regularly requires regular training, dedication and perseverance; so too ‘missionary dynamism’, to bring ‘salt’ to this apostolic work of catechesis for children. The saltiness Pope Francis is referring to is not the actual activity of our work but how this work is undertaken. In challenging us to not allow ourselves to be robbed of the joy of evangelisation Pope Francis states “the problem is not always an excess of activity, but rather activity undertaken badly without adequate motivation, without a spirituality which would permeate it and make it pleasurable”⁴. When rereading and paying attention to this whole paragraph, and in light of the Samaritan woman, the feeling of effervescent joy arose. Immersing myself quite unintentionally in a Killen and de Beer⁵ theological reflection, given life experiences namely my science background, these images arose. In sharing these images with you, it isn’t to be self-referential but to offer some insight on how you too, can challenge yourself to ponder any paragraphs in Evangelii Gaudium but particularly for this challenge ‘not allowing ourselves to be robbed of the joy of evangelisation’ paragraphs 81-83, specifically #82. Seeing what images come to mind for you, does your image(s) spark insight into any scripture, church history or life experiences such as biblical texts, songs, hymns, poems, phrases to shift any problem areas Pope Francis names as ‘selfishness and spiritual sloth’.

Term One 2015

We are so blessed to live in Australia, in our Diocese of Broken Bay, where every catechist is presented with opportunities to enrich our actions to a point of effervescence, to a point of joyfulness brimming over, where we can make spiritually healthy choices to channel our time and energy, equipping ourselves for the marathon befitting our baptismal call, that is the task of evangelisation as “a joyful response to God’s love which summons us to mission and makes us fulfilled and productive”.⁶ Jennifer Skelly Regional Support Coordinator CCD

Living the Joy of the Gospel (this article will also appear in the October edition of Broken Bay News)

Last Sunday in the Lakes Parish at 9.30am Mass we had a special occasion. This was the presentation of an award to Nancy Page for thirty years of service as a Catechist in our parish. Nancy has a special reason for receiving her award at this time as she has cancer and knows that there is nothing that can be done medically.

respect and love for Nancy. Nancy spoke after the presentation and said how important it was to her to be a Catechist; how she loved the children and also felt it was her privilege to be able to have this opportunity to tell them about God. I know, from seeing her teacher's manual, how much effort and thought she has put into her preparation over the years so as to present the children she teaches with a love of God they will retain. Nancy is, has been, and always will be an outstanding example for all through her obvious joy, love and commitment to being a Catechist.

Through Advent to Christmas Tear out and keep! Aim of the game is to revise and reinforce the students’ knowledge of the season of Advent. The questions and answers are found in the lessons on Advent and Christmas from Walking with Jesus. Copy the game board (overleaf), enough for each team. Equipment Needed  1 Dice and cup to roll dice  One A3 size copy of the game board  1 counter per player/team of players Rules 1. The teacher is the quiz master for this game. 2. If you have a small class of up to 8 students, they may play as individual players. For larger classes, the students can form teams Three would be a minimum number of teams with no more than six teams. This will keep the game lowing and keep all students involved. 3. To begin the game, the player or team that rolls the highest number move first, using the number shown on the dice. 4. When the player/team lands on a candle, a question is asked. If the question is answered correctly the player/team has a free throw and moves on. If the question is answered incorrectly, the player/ team misses a go. The player/team to reach the Christmas space first, wins but that player/team must roll the correct number to land on the space, e.g. if there a four spaces to get to “Christmas”, a ‘4’ must be rolled. If a larger number is rolled, the player/team stays on the space. Stage One Questions (you may like to prepare your own for older students) 1. Whose birth are we waiting for in Advent? Jesus’ birth 2. For whom were the people in the Bible waiting? The Saviour 3. What was the angel’s name that appeared to Mary? Gabriel 4. What was Mary asked to become? The mother of Jesus 5. The angels 9. What did the Shepherds do after they visited Jesus in the stable? They told everyone where to find Jesus. 10. Name one of the gifts the Wise Men brought Jesus. Gold, Incense or Myrrh. 11. Whom did Mary visit? Elizabeth 12. What is the name of Elizabeth’s baby? John 13. How many Sundays are there in Advent? Four 14. What are the colours of the 4 candles on the Advent Wreath? 3 purple candles and on pink candle 15. What does the 1st candle stand for? Hope t 16. What does the 2nd candle stand for? Waiting 17. Manly Freshwater Parish - SRE by the Sea PROFILE of a PARISH This looks like a small parish CCD community, however it is a parish with a big welcoming heart and in the last five years it has experienced a tremendous growth, almost doubling the number of students attending SRE classes. Manly Freshwater Parish has 50 volunteer catechists to service the three Government Schools of Harbord Public with 357 Catholic SRE students, Manly West Public with 244 Catholic SRE students and Manly Village with 116 Catholic SRE students. It is worthy to note that 4 of the catechists are mothers with children at Harbord Public. There are two dedicated coordinators in this parish. Laurie Riley has been coordinator for 14 years and Toni Walsh has worked with and shared the coordinating role with Laurie for the past 5 years. These great ‘mates’, who are both teachers, have worked jointly together over the past five years, mentoring and encouraging their catechists to attend training. Often they will accompany their new

catechists to training and assist me with hospitality in training sessions. Toni is well known in the area. She was ‘born and bred’ on the Peninsula and taught for 39 years in Catholic Schools on the Peninsula. She is “the lady everyone knows” because she has had contact with so many students and their families in both Catholic and Government Schools. She also assists the parish with the Sacramental Programme and Children’s Liturgy. Many SRE students attend because Toni gives them a personal invite to the programmes. Both ladies embrace the opportunity to be part of the Ecumenical Community, sharing in the Easter/ Christmas Assemblies with the students and the World day of Prayer and Annual Christmas Carols on the beach with members of other denominations. One of the highlighted experiences I have had the pleasure to enjoy with the catechists of the Manly Freshwater parish is their twice yearly gathering for lunch at Dee Why RSL. The warmth and friendship

of both coordinators is reflected in the hospitality of the catechists. This parish was the first to negotiate and coordinate the student catechist programme on the Peninsula. Most of this was initiated by Toni with Joanne Kalayzich the youth minister of St Paul’s Catholic College Manly. There have been three groups of students who began going into the Government schools of the parish in 2013. The students were a welcome part of our recent Regional Mass which was hosted by the Manly Freshwater Parish in St Mary’s Church, Manly. In this last group from St Paul’s there are 3 students who are ex-Harbord Public students. Congratulations to Laurie and Toni as wonderful coordinators and to all the dedicated catechists of Manly Freshwater Parish.

We love to receive your stories from the Classroom or Parishes to include in Connections. If you would like to submit an article please do so. It can be as little as a few lines on a good lesson; a story; a resource you’ve found; or a special event in the parish or school. If there’s something you’d like to see us cover in future editions, please let us know that too!
