Lights of Christmas

A free family Christmas event

Again, Christmas will take over the St Mary’s Cathedral façade with a show of music, lights and projections. From Thursday, 5 December to Wednesday, 25 December, the cathedral will be illuminated with vivid Christmas projections. The display will be presented from 8:30pm to 11pm each night, with food vans serving snacks from 5pm and choirs bringing carols to the forecourt from 7:30pm on scheduled evenings.

The Opening night will feature Friar Alessandro (Voice of Peace) and acclaimed Australian pianist, Vivian Choi with the Sydney choir and orchestra, Artes Christi. Other performances will include: Aurora Australis Chorus, Cantabile Choir, CASPA Choir, Coastal a Cappella, Coro Innominata, Endeavour Harmony Chorus, Hummingsong Community Choirs – Alkira, Northern Beaches Chorus, Sing Australia Ashbury, Sopranos on Stage, Soulfood, Sydney Street Choir, The Jingle Belles Singers, The Overcommitments, The Smith Sisters Choir, and the Tongan Catholic Chaplaincy Choir.

The lights will present the customs and traditions of Christmas through the ages. Scenes will be presented as a series of dioramas represented by spectacular Renaissance artworks. A selection of Madonna and Child artworks will be included with some of the magnificent Renaissance period artworks owned by the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art together with images of the Holy family.

This year is the ten year anniversary of the Lights of Christmas display.
