Building Faith, Forming Community, Serving Generations

Planning with Purpose: The Cathedral Precinct Redevelopment Journey

"If the LORD does not build the house, in vain do its builders labour." — Psalm 127:1a

A Living Heritage

The Diocese of Broken Bay inherited a legacy of faithful service stretching back to the 19th century. From the Sisters of Mercy in 1897 to the thriving community today, this precinct is the spiritual heart of the Diocese.

It is a place where faith is lived daily—in the church, in the classroom, and in service to the poor. It belongs not only to the Church, but to the broader community.

Spiritual Home

A sacred space where we can worship God, celebrate the sacraments, and pray individually and communally.

Education

Strengthening Catholic education, ensuring space for learning and growth in faith, knowledge, and wisdom.

Pastoral Care

Expanding support services for the vulnerable and restoring outreach programs like the community kitchen.

Our Future

Grounded in Faith & Justice

We are not simply master-planning a piece of land; we are discerning how to best use the gifts entrusted to us by God for the good of all.

This vision is centred on people, not structures—creating a gathering place for the whole person: body, mind, and spirit.

  • Enhance environmental stewardship & protect creation
  • Engage deeply with Indigenous communities
  • Integrate educational, pastoral, and spiritual uses
  • Respect heritage while responding to future needs

Architecture Vision

Artist Impression of the precinct under construction

"From the very beginning, this project has not been about buildings. It is about people... to ensure that the Cathedral Precinct will be a place of welcome, prayer, learning, service, and mission for the next two hundred years."

The Journey

Progress Through Consultation

Since June 2022, we have engaged in deep listening. No architectural designs have been decided. The Precinct will be shaped by dialogue, not imposed.
