As we start Term 3, I hope you have managed to get a little rest over the school holidays and are recharged for an exciting term ahead.

I trust, as this edition of Connections reaches you, that you have enjoyed a well-earned midyear break. It’s hard to believe we are half way through the school year already. By now, of course, you will have established a great working relationship with your students and I hope you are experiencing some special moments in the classroom as you and the children explore your faith together. The wonderful faith sharing experience is one of the joys of teaching religious education to children. We seem to learn more than we could have imagined was possible when we first stepped foot in the SRE classroom. In contrast, there are often challenges as we deal with behavioural issues, inadequate accommodation, competing activities and other concerns that seem to come our way from time to time. One of the things I love about catechists is that you just ‘get on with it’ and in spite of the challenges which you face, you seem to be inspired to bounce back each week as you go about your work. The Holy Spirit is alive and well in SRE. The month of July sees the Feast Day of Sts. Joachim and Anne, the parents of Mary and, of course, the grandparents of Jesus. The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference Pastoral Life Commission has suggested that we celebrate Grandparents Day on the Feast Day of Sts. Joachim and Anne on 26 July. Grandparents can play a very significant role in the faith development of their grandchildren. As a grandparent myself, I see the face of God, which is love, in the grandchildren that I love. The love I have for them is nothing that can be compared to anything else I have ever experienced. The joy of gazing into their little faces and watching their interactions with other family members as they weave their spell of love upon them, simply by their presence, is indeed a gift from God. When I ponder on the fact that ‘God is

love’, I can only begin to understand the depth of that love in the innocence of a grandchild. Perhaps during the week of 26 July, we could invite the children to prayer during our lesson to honour and thank God for grandparents, and/or the older relatives and friends in their lives who are like grandparents to them. We should, of course, also pray for the grandparents who have died. As the Year of Faith draws to its conclusion, the Vatican has announced that it will be celebrating a Day for Catechists in late September. Catechists from all over the world will gather in Rome for this celebration. I encourage our parishes locally to do something special on the last weekend in September to recognise this important event – perhaps you could include prayers for Catechists in the Prayers of the Faithful at weekend Masses, or ask your Parish Priest if he would bless the Catechists at each Mass. It might be an opportunity to gather outside of Mass for a cup of tea with other parishioners in order to highlight the significance of the Catechist ministry. If you would like some ideas on prayers or blessings, please contact your Regional CCD Office. Perhaps also it would be an opportunity to include other catechists in your prayers and activities – those who teach in Catholic schools and those who work in other parish ministries, like RCIA, Sacramental programs or Children’s Liturgy of the Word. During August, we celebrate the Feast of St. Mary of the Cross MacKillop, so we thought it timely to focus on Australia’s First Saint in this edition of Connections. Jennifer Skelly concludes her five part series on “Filling our Wells” in the Catechist Spirituality pages of this edition and refers to the trust in God that Mary MacKillop had to exercise frequently during her life. Michael Tebbutt has provided us with a Mary MacKillop board game to play in the classroom, which is designed to improve the students’
knowledge of Mary MacKillop. It is suitable for most age groups. Kinder, 1 and 2 would probably need some additional direction. This edition is also full of other great articles, photos and information so we hope you enjoy catching up on what’s happening around the Diocese. Please look for the advertisement on page 7 for the Bible Conference which is being hosted by our Diocese on 9 & 10 August at Waitara. Given that the content of the Walking with Jesus curriculum is underpinned by Sacred Scripture, I’m sure you would benefit by attendance at this conference. Catechists who attend the Bible Conference will receive credits towards the completion of the CCD Level 3 Diploma Certificate. Finally, Term 3 is when we begin to celebrate our Ministry for the year with Regional Masses across all three main regions of the Diocese. At these Masses, we will present accreditation awards for Levels 1 and 2 of our training program and years of service awards for 5, 10 and 15 years of service. I warmly invite all catechists and their families to join with us in celebrating the Catechist ministry at one of these Masses. As we work our way through the Ordinary time of the year, there seem to be extraordinary things happening in our Ministry! I pray that God will bless you, the children you teach and their families. Secondary School Ministry on the Peninsula In 2013 the Secondary School SRE Ministry in the Peninsula Deanery has undergone a vibrant increase and dynamic change. Eight out of the eleven Government High schools in the Manly Warringah Peninsula region are served by a small but remarkable team of only thirteen catechists. These committed men and women undertake the challenging task of presenting lessons to Year 7-10 students, often visiting more than one school as well as relieving for one another. There are lots of variations in the way SRE is presented. The school models vary from one lesson per term for years 7-10 at Cromer High and Killarney Heights High to twenty lessons per year for Years 7-10 at Barrenjoey High. The students at Pittwater High and Manly Selective High receive ten weekly lessons for a term. This year two new models were introduced at Forest High and Davidson High. At Forest High the Year 7 students are broken into six small groups of 4, 5, 6 students, they receive two lessons a term, an increase from one per term. The Years 8-10 at Forest High receive two seminar style lessons per term an increase from one per term in the past. The attendance of students in the seminar lessons has increased from ten to thirty students. At Davidson High the students from each year group are divided into A & B groups to make the numbers for teaching approximately fifteen in each lesson. They receive three seminar lessons per term which will increase to four in Term 4 and into 2014. These students were previously receiving one seminar lesson per term; the change means that they will eventually receive sixteen per year.

Narrabeen Sports High has nine weekly lessons for Years 7 -10 all in one term on either Monday or Friday. Numbers of students are between twenty and thirty. Vale Allan Johnson Allan was a long-serving and committed catechist at Waitara Public School for 10 years. He is survived by his wife, Erica, 3 children and 6 grandchildren. Vale Maria Gesler Maria will be sadly missed by her family and parish. Maria was a member of her parish choir. (Part 5of 5)
“FILLING OUR WELLS” has been a series of reflections written for you, the catechist, to explore and deepen your own Catechist Spirituality personally and/or communally within your Parish Catechist meetings. The foundation for these reflections has come from the six characteristics of Catechist Spirituality spelled out by the bishops of the Church in the document ‘Guide for Catechists’ in The Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples. In this issue of Connections ‘having missionary zeal’ and ‘having a devotion to Mary’ will be explored. The recent movie “Won’t back down” touches a chord to thresh out the meaning of missionary zeal in a heartfelt sense. It revolves around the lives of two determined mothers. Jamie Fitzpatrick is a single, hard-working blue collar woman who having struggled with childhood dyslexia herself wants only for her daughter Malia (also a dyslexic) to have a good education. Nona Alberts is a teacher at the school Malia attends. Earlier in her career Nona was a wonderfully gifted teacher but she had slowly become apathetic because of the frustrations of working in a failing inner-city school and personal problems from a looming marriage separation and a son who has learning difficulties. Their paths meet as they both seek avenues to personally help their own children. In the process they transform not only themselves but their school community by winning the hearts and minds of fellow parents and work colleagues one by one. Collectively they actively overcome the red tape to rescue their failing school. The movie exemplifies the words of our own St Mary of the Cross, “Never see a need without doing something about it.”
As catechists we take our baptismal call seriously and responsibly, putting aside our personal agendas to prioritise proclaiming God’s Word to children in Government schools. As volunteers in today’s society, it is understandable we sometimes encounter personal frustrations when perhaps we face a challenging class and think “why am I doing this?” We may face school challenges with conflicting activities scheduled. Some schools may be facing conflicting ethic classes. Sometimes we may feel the burden of the ongoing demand for catechists as personal and this burden can dim the light within us. The light that needs to burn brightly to have missionary zeal begins step by step, gathering together, journeying together into our weekly lessons: chatting about the children, our lessons, resources we used –maybe even one of the new smart board lessons so our lessons are presented eagerly, clearly and passionately. We may pray together, share Eucharist together, be in another ministry together. When together you don’t become so tired, or frayed. SmartBoard Lessons Update….. The updated USB flash drive contains resources for the core lessons from the “Walking with Jesus” curriculum Kindergarten to Year 6. Catechists who have attended previous SmartBoard training sessions will have received a USB with resources for lessons in the first half of the year and may swap this USB for the new one - Version 2 which includes core lessons for the whole year. There are three ways to exchange USBs: CCD Parish Coordinators will be asked to advise CCD Regional Coordinators of upcoming catechist meeting dates and venues. Where possible, Regional Coordinators will attend these venues with Version 2 USBs to exchange with original USBs. Parish Coordinators will need to advise catechists to bring their original USBs to the meetings.
Catechists may call in to Regional CCD offices to exchange USBs. Check that the regional office has stock beforehand. Catechists may post the original USB to the nearest Regional CCD office with details of return address so that Version 2 can be posted back without delay. Because of copy right requirements, the original USB needs to be returned before Version 2 can be provided. Each Term we try to include some ideas for the classroom for when you need inspiration or something extra for your class. On pages 9 and 10 are questions and a game board to be copied for use as described below.
Mary MacKillop – Australia’s First Saint Game Rules Group the class into evenly numbered groups of up to 6 per group and read Mary MacKillop’s story to the class (included as a separate sheet with this copy of Connections). After reading the story, let the children begin playing the game. Throw a 6 to start. If you land on a question mark, the person next to you has to pick up a card and ask the question on it. If you answer correctly, move ahead 6 spaces. If you answer incorrectly, move back 6 spaces. The first person to reach the Home space wins the game. Game Equipment 6 counters and 1 dice per game. To make the game board Using a photocopier, enlarge the game board to A3 size and paste on cardboard or laminate. Using a photocopier, enlarge the questions to A3 size onto coloured paper and cut out. Reflection Days May 2013
Over 60 participants attended each of the two Reflection Days held at Terrey Hills and The Entrance and facilitated by Monica Brown from Emmaus Productions. Monica provided everyone with an opportunity to pause and be still, through the blending and weaving of music with scripture, imagery and ritual. It was also a way to reflect on one’s own spiritual journey and to come into the holy ground of one’s own being where, in that sacred space, God may be found. Those who were present were invited to come into a sacred space and to simply be.
