Patrick Kirkwood: To comfort the disturbed and to disturb the comfortable

This week's Vox Populi comes from Patrick Kirkwood. Patrick studied philosophy and theology and was Head of Religious Programs for the ABC. He then became Director of the Catholic Audio Visual Centre at Homebush and a Media Consultant for the Catholic Education Office, Archdiocese of Sydney. He is now retired and is active in the Wahroonga Parish, previously at Normanhurst. He is married to Mary and they have six children.


 
I worked in the ABC for many years in the Religious Department, now called Religion and Ethics. Some colleagues called us the “God Botherers”.  We didn’t mind since it was a reverse kind of tribute and when they needed an insight into something beyond the news, they often talked to us.  It was a kind of religious advice centre.
