Eucharist

Catholics believe that on the night before he died, Jesus gave his Apostles an incredible gift—a way that he would continue to be present in his Church, through his Body and Blood, in the Eucharist.

Consequently, we are a Eucharistic community, and as such we encourage full and active participation at Sunday Mass, where we celebrate the saving death and resurrection of Jesus Christ at the Lord's Table.

By eating the Body and drinking the Blood of Christ in the Eucharist we become united to the person of Christ through his humanity. "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him" [Jn 6:56].

In being united to the humanity of Christ we are at the same time united to his divinity. The Second Vatican Council taught that, for Catholics, “Taking part in the Eucharistic Sacrifice, is the source and summit of the whole Christian life; they offer the divine victim to God and offer themselves along with it.”
