Monsignor Stuart Hall appointed as the Military Bishop of Australia
Former Director-General of Navy Chaplaincy, Monsignor Stuart Hall, has been appointed by Pope Leo as the Military Bishop of Australia, taking on the leadership of the Military Ordinariate of Australia which acts as the Catholic diocese for the Australian Defence Force.
Despite decades of service as a priest and Navy chaplain, Monsignor Hall was surprised by the appointment, emphasising that priesthood is driven by service rather than personal ambition. His extensive background with the Navy—including impactful time supporting young sailors adjusting to military life at HMAS Cerberus—deepened his understanding of family life and the unique demands of military service. He views chaplains as a crucial, independent listening ear within the military structure.
Ordained priest in 1987, Bishop-elect Hall served for 22 years as a Navy chaplain in naval establishments throughout Australia and aboard fleet units, deploying on operational service, including to Timor-Leste and the Middle East. Prior to this appointment, he served as the Dean of St Patrick’s Cathedral in Melbourne.
In his new role, Monsignor Hall’s primary focus will be serving Catholic Defence members, supporting their families, and aiding veterans as they navigate the challenging transition to civilian life. His early priorities include:
- Uniting Catholic chaplains and engaging with Defence senior leadership.
- Strengthening support for Catholic Defence families living in remote locations.
- Building stronger ties between local parishes and the Military Diocese so service members feel connected to the broader community.
Monsignor Hall maintains that his core purpose remains serving ADF personnel and their families while contributing to conversations about the spiritual well-being of all service members.
He will be consecrated as Bishop at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Melbourne on 29 August 2026, with all Defence personnel invited to attend.
