Pope Francis is being remembered on the one year anniversary of his passing, with a Mass set to be celebrated the Basilica of St Mary Major on Tuesday.
Pope Francis died on 21 April 2025, Easter Monday, and his funeral took place five days later, to be buried in the Basilica of St Mary Major.
The Basilica announced a tribute to the late Pontiff will take place on Tuesday, beginning with a rosary in the Pauline Chapel followed by a Mass which will include a message from Pope Leo XIV who is currently in Africa on his Apostolic Journey. A livestream of the Mass will be available.
The Pontiff's death had come just a day after he made a surprise appearance just a day earlier, greeting people from the popemobile in St Peter's Square after appearing on the central balcony of Saint Peter's Basilica after Easter Sunday Mass.
He had been recovering from several weeks in hospital with a respiratory infection. He passed away at 7:35am Rome time on Easter Monday at Casa Santa Marta.
A year on, he is still being remembered as a champion of humility, mercy and parity.
