Pope Leo XIV is recovering well following surgery earlier this week which removed a portion of his lung and has resumed some light work.

In an update on Thursday afternoon in Rome, Dr Luigi Carbone and Prof Stefano Margaritora said the Holy Father’s recovering was continuing to progress normally.

“This morning, the Holy Father underwent routine checks, which yielded normal results," they said. "The chest X-ray showed good recovery of the lung that underwent surgery."

“[He] carried out his daily activities independently and his physiotherapy session included a full range of physical activities."

"Overall, his postoperative recovery is progressing normally," they concluded.

The Pope also concelebrated Mass on Thursday morning in a room specially prepared for the purpose on the 10th floor of Gemelli Hospital, just as he had done on Wednesday.

He also resumed some light work, meeting on Thursday afternoon with the Substitute for General Affairs, Archbishop Paolo Rudelli.

Earlier on Thursday morning, the Holy See Press Office had provided a simple update, stating: "The Pope had a good night in the hospital, got up and had breakfast.”

When he first announced his surgery, Pope Leo XIV had said he expected the recovery to take a week.

So far, the Holy See has not indicated any change to this schedule and the reports from his doctors suggest his recovery is on track.
