Learn about the Holy Spirit at the Bible Conference

The Catholic Diocese of Broken Bay is delighted to host the 7th Broken Bay Bible Conference this October, with the theme The Holy Spirit through the Pages of Scripture. Over two days, 11-12 October 2019, delegates will discover through the Bible who the Holy Spirit is, and explore how the Spirit guides, enlivens and encourages our lives and the Church today.

The Conference will bring together biblical scholar Dr Debra Snoddy and one of Australia’s leading theologians Rev Assoc. Prof. Ormond Rush.

Dr Debra Snoddy is Lecturer in Biblical Studies at the Catholic Institute of Sydney (CIS). Debra completed an STL in Sacred Scripture in 1999 at the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium, and was awarded a PhD and STD in 2014 from the same university. Debra has held positions at the Archdiocese of Armagh; All Hallows College, Dublin; and Carlow College, Carlow in Ireland.

Rev Assoc. Prof. Ormond Rush currently lectures at St Paul’s Theological College and Australian Catholic University, Banyo QLD. He has a doctorate in Theology from the Gregorian University in Rome and a Master of Education from the University of Southern Queensland. Fr Rush was previously President of St Paul’s Theological College from 2001 to 2006 and is a published author.

Topics over the two days will explore the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament and New Testament and will include: The Spirit as the Breath and Word of God in Creation; The Spirit as Counsellor of Old Testament Leaders; The Spirit as Inspirer of the Prophets; The Spirit Who Enlightens Us; The Spirit and Discipleship in the New Testament; The Spirit as the Advocate in the Gospel of John; Jesus and the Spirit.

The final session of the Conference is The Spirit throughout the Life of the Church: Discerning the Spirit’s Promptings through the 2020 Plenary Council, where we will consider the role of the Holy Spirit in the Australian Church today as we find ourselves navigating the process and significance of the Plenary Council.
