Training and Formation

The CCD offers a three level Certificate Course designed to assist the Special Religious Education (SRE) teacher (catechist) in the development of the knowledge, skills and understanding required to teach SRE in government schools in the diocese. The course covers such topics as classroom management, child protection, curriculum, teaching methods, child/adolescent development, the Scriptures, church and spirituality.

Level One consists of fourteen 2-hour units, and Level Two and Level Three consist of twelve 2-hour units. A certificate is awarded on successful completion of Levels One and Two and a Diploma on the completion of Level Three.

The Department of Education requires that all catechists undertake accredited initial and ongoing training in Child Protection and Classroom Management.

New or returning catechists who have not completed Level One since 2013 must undertake basic training in the form of the CCD Ministry Induction (CCDMI). This is a seven-unit course which is required to be completed before catechists receive full authorisation. The CCDMI units make up the first half of the Level One course.

training-2In-services are offered to help the catechists in specific skills and reflection days are also planned throughout the year. Details regarding training dates can be obtained from the Parish Catechist Co-ordinator or by going to our Training and Events Calendar page.

Current information regarding Child Protection and Classroom Management matters along with each term's calendar of events are regularly published in the catechist newsletter Connections.
