Personal

Anthony Randazzo was born on 7 October 1966 in Sydney, the son of Colin Randazzo and his wife Caterina Di Losa from Lipari, Italy. He is the third of four children and was baptised at Mater Dei Church in Blakehurst, Sydney.

His parents worked as fruiterers in their family business at Bankstown, Sydney, until relocating to the Gold Coast, Queensland in 1967 where he attended Saint Augustine's School in Coolangatta, Guardian Angels School in Southport, and Aquinas College in Southport.

Studies and Church

In 1985, Anthony Randazzo commenced his formation for the priesthood at Pius XII Seminary, Banyo, Queensland and was ordained to the priesthood on 29 November 1991 at the Cathedral of St Stephen, Brisbane, by Archbishop Francis Roberts Rush.

From 1992 to 1994, he was curate at St Mary's Parish in Ipswich and for the following two years he was master of ceremonies at St Stephen's Cathedral, Brisbane.

In 1998 Randazzo was sent to Rome to undertake studies in canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University. On his return to Brisbane in 2001, he was appointed Pastor of Regina Caeli Parish in Coorparoo Heights, the associate judicial vicar of the regional tribunal, and the Director of Vocations for the Archdiocese of Brisbane.

Called to Rome in 2004, Randazzo worked in the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith for five years after which he returned to Australia and was rector of the Holy Spirit Seminary in Brisbane until 2015. In the first semester of 2016 he had sabbatical leave for studies in Sacred Scripture in Jerusalem.

On 24 June 2016 he was appointed by Pope Francis to be a new auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Sydney. He was consecrated on 24 August 2016 at Saint Mary's Cathedral, Sydney by Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP.

Appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Broken Bay by Pope Francis on 7 October 2019, his installation took place on 4 November 2019, the Feast of St Charles Borromeo.

A community where we are guided by the Holy Spirit towards Jesus Christ as his disciples supported by a vibrant Church where parishes are not only homes of prayer, worship and authentic Catholic formation but places of joy-filled gatherings."

In the Diocese of Broken Bay

Since his time as Director of Vocations in Brisbane, Most Rev Randazzo has been a passionate and enthusiastic supporter of priestly and religious vocations. On 1 May 2021 he opened and blessed Joseph House, a vocational house of discernment for young men.

He has also presided over a number of diaconate and priestly ordinations, overseen the development of Catholic Schools Broken Bay to be the fastest-growing Catholic schools system in NSW, and encouraged youth ministries and evangelisation initiatives in the Diocese including leading a pilgrimage group through Italy to Rome for the Holy Jubilee Year of Hope.

Since 2021 he has supported one of Australia's most powerful Catholic youth conferences, Ignite, hosting the conference in the Diocese since 2023.

As a Permanent Member of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, Most Rev Anthony Randazzo has been Chair of the Episcopal Panel for Canon Law since 2021.

Through his homilies and pastoral letters to the community and clergy of Broken Bay he has shared his mission and reflections including Jesus Christ: Our Beginning and End (2021); One in Christ (2025); The Mystery of Faith: Encountering Jesus Christ in the Eucharist (2025); and A Charter of the Ecclesial Life of the Diocese of Broken Bay: Witnesses of the Resurrection (2025).

Between 2021 and 2024, Most Rev Anthony Randazzo has overseen the development of regional Pastoral Discernments across the Diocese's three deaneries - Central Coast, Northern Beaches, and North Shore - encouraging participation and proposing new initiatives to strengthen missionary life.

He has also dedicated the Diocese's 40th anniversary to the preparation for a Diocesan Synod he will convoke on 23 May 2026 (Pentecost).

International

In February 2023, Bishop Randazzo was elected president of the Federation of Catholic Bishops Conferences of Oceania (FCBCO).

In April 2023, he was named Apostolic Administrator of the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of the Southern Cross.

Most Rev Anthony Randazzo represented Oceania at the 16th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops in Rome (2023-24).

As president of the FCBCO he was instrumental in the formation of the Migrants and Refugees Oceania Network.

On 25 March 2026, on the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord, Bishop Anthony Randazzo was appointed Prefect of the Dicastery for Legislative Texts with the personal title of Archbishop.

Post-nominal letters: DD and JCL refer to Most Rev Anthony Randazzo's ecclesiastical and academic qualifications: DD for Doctor Divinitatis (Doctor of Divinity) and JCL for Juris Canonici Licentiatus (Licentiate in Canon Law).
